Thanks Grandma!

I am finishing unpacking at my new house tonight and came across a framed piece of calligraphy that my grandma did maybe 20 years ago. The quote always resonated with me, even when I was young and had relatively few disappointments or real trials. It says,

“Be like the bird that,
pausing in her flight
awhile on boughs to slight,
feels them give way beneath her,
and yet sings,
knowing she has wings.”
                  -Victor Hugo

As I’ve gone through an awful lot in the last 10 years that might have crushed me, I’ve honestly worked very hard to maintain this mindset.  There have been days where the mantra, “I have wings…I have wings…I have wings…” kept me from going under. I’m not sure that I can attribute my entire attitude or resilience to Grandma, but she certainly gave me the articulation of it.
